Arm Lift Surgery (Brachioplasty)
WHAT IS AN ARM LIFT OPERATION?
Arm lift surgery is scientifically known as “Brachioplasty.” It is a kind of plastic surgery conducted primarily to get rid of excess fat in the arms and tighten the sagged and loose skin. With this surgery, the plastic surgeon also removes excess weight or fat in the skin that may result in an irregular shape of the arms with the rest of the upper body or distort the aesthetic of the arms. The arm lift surgery is conducted under general anesthesia.
Many reasons can lead to arms sagging, such as aging, severe obesity followed by weight loss, medical conditions, and eating many unhealthy foods that allow fat to accumulate in different areas of the body. Hormonal causes may also lead to sagging in the upper arms, such as increased estrogen in women during pregnancy and childbirth.
TECHNIQUES USED IN THE ARM LIFT OPERATION
Non-Surgical Arm Lift (With Vaser): Vaser technology is the latest technology used in arm lift operations. The Vaser device works to dissolve fat in the desired location.
Surgical Arm Lift: The skin is tightened with surgical intervention when the sagging is severe and often when the patient has undergone liposuction. The skin size is surgically reduced, and the excess skin is cut off by opening an incision and then closing it after the sagging has been tightened. There are many types of surgical incisions in the arm lift operation, such as thickened, character-shaped, and extended incisions.
Ultrasound Energy: It relies on using ultrasound energy to target the area from which fat is to be removed. When the dissolving of the fat process is done, it sucks it off.

- People with bat-like deformities in the arms.
- Elderly people who are suffering from sagging skin on their arms due to aging.
PRE-ARM LIFT OPERATION TIPS
- Refrain from smoking for a period of time (one-two month) before undergoing an arm lift operation.
- Stop having Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and some vitamins for a while (two weeks – one month) before the operation, which may cause bleeding during the procedure.
- Do not eat or drink anything after the time specified by your doctor.
- Do not use any moisturizer on the day of operation.
- Avoid having stimulants, green tea, and alcohol.
RECOVERY PHASE AND POST-OPERATION TIPS
The patient stays at least one day in the hospital. The patient must adhere to the instructions and advice dictated by the doctor after the operation to get the best results and maintain a healthy recovery process to expedite it without risks or damages:
- For at least two months following surgery, refrain from participating in sports and exerting additional effort.
- Adhere to wearing compression girdles for at least six weeks after the operation.
- For at least two weeks following the procedure, avoid exposure to high temperatures to prevent infection of the arms.
- Rest well for two weeks after the operation.
- Adhere to taking medications prescribed by your doctor and antibiotics regularly.
STAGES OF ARM LIFT OPERATION
- The initial stage is anesthesia, as it is with all surgical procedures. The surgeon resorts to total anesthesia in the lift and cosmetic surgery for the arms.
- The doctor makes a surgical incision. The surgical incision is made in the armpit.
- The incision’s size and length depend on the amount of fat and skin to be removed during the operation.
- The desired cosmetic surgery is conducted, whether it is a skin tightening, removal of arm wrinkles, or liposuction for the arm, followed by skin tightening.
- The doctor closes the surgical incision, puts bandages on the arms, enters the patient in the stage of resuscitation, and then waits for the results.
